Claude vs ChatGPT: What's the difference?

Once, it was all about ChatGPT – the shining star of AI, the name on everyone’s lips. But then along came Claude, turning heads with its charm, style, and a name that oozes French sophistication.

Sure, it’s not actually French, but with a name like Claude, who could blame us for imagining it with a dash of Parisian flair?

Anyway, we digress. Both tools take different approaches to helping users, yet many websites push oversimplified "which is better" comparisons. A closer look at their abilities, speed, creativity, knowledge limits, ideal uses, and of course, cost reveals two distinct assistants with their own strengths. We break down the differences that matter when choosing between them.

The AI race heats up

OpenAI threw down the gauntlet in late 2022 with ChatGPT, quickly amassing over 100 million users. Anthropic responded in 2023 with Claude, bringing a fresh approach built by former OpenAI talent with a laser focus on safety and ethics. Now both AIs are powerhouses, but they shine in distinctly different ways.

The memory game and why context is king

One of Claude's biggest advantages is its massive 200,000 token context window. That’s a bit  like having a conversation with someone who can remember an entire novel's worth of details. ChatGPT's 128,000 token window isn't small, but when you're doing deep analysis of long documents or managing complex projects, that extra capacity makes Claude the clear winner.

Style and substance when it comes to writing

ChatGPT often writes like, well, an AI trying to sound human. It's technically solid but can feel oddly formal or flowery without careful prompting. Claude, on the other hand, has a more natural voice that flows better in blog posts and creative writing.

We tested both by asking for a short essay about content marketing. ChatGPT delivered a structured but somewhat rigid response, while Claude's take read more like a piece from an experienced marketing writer, complete with relevant examples and conversational asides.

That’s not to say Claude is perfect. While large language models (LLMs) can speed up the writing process, relying on them to create fully fleshed-out pieces of content isn’t advisable. Think of them more as an assistant rather than a replacement for human creativity and critical thinking.

Processing power is the technical muscle

ChatGPT flexes its muscles when it comes to technical tasks, especially with iGPT-4o. It can process images, analyse code and handle multiple types of data simultaneously. While Claude can analyse images and documents, it can't generate visuals. This could prove to be a limitation for marketers and content creators who need that capability.

The ethics angle offers up an unexpected twist

Here's where things get interesting. When we asked ChatGPT about Claude, it gave a straightforward comparison. But when we flipped the question to Claude, it refused to make direct comparisons, citing ethical considerations. This wasn't a technical limitation more so than a deliberate choice reflecting Anthropic's focus on responsible AI.

Indeed, much of Claude's creation is around ethical AI. For instance, Anthropic developed something called Constitutional AI, which is embedding ethical principles directly into Claude's core framework. These guidelines are more than surface level rules and shape everything from how Claude processes information to how it interacts with users.

This includes strict standards around fairness, transparency and privacy protection. While some might see this as overly cautious, it represents a fascinating shift in how AI companies approach development, prioritising responsible innovation alongside technical capability.

Breaking down the pricing options

Both platforms offer free versions, but their premium tiers tell different stories:

Claude:

  • Free Version: Claude offers a free version accessible through claude.ai or the Claude iOS app, with certain usage limitations. For enhanced features and higher usage limits, users can upgrade to Claude Pro.
  • Claude 3 Opus: This model is designed for complex scenarios and advanced AI tasks. API access is priced at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens. For individual users, the Claude Pro subscription is available at $20 per month in the US, £18 in the UK, or €18 in the EU, plus applicable taxes.
  • Claude 3 Sonnet: A balanced model suitable for a variety of tasks. API access starts at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
  • Claude 3 Haiku: A faster, more cost-effective model for simpler tasks. API access is priced at $0.25 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens.

ChatGPT:

  • Free version: Provides access to basic functionalities.
  • ChatGPT Plus: Offers enhanced features, including access to advanced models like GPT-4o and GPT-4o1, for $20 per month.
  • Enterprise options: Tailored for businesses, these plans include additional features and administrative controls. Pricing details are typically customised based on the organisation's needs.

Real-world performance and the tasks that matter

In day-to-day use, each AI shows distinct strengths:

Content creation

Claude excels at long-form content, crafting more nuanced and naturally flowing articles. It's particularly good at maintaining consistency across lengthy pieces.

Technical analysis

ChatGPT edges ahead in data analysis and technical documentation, especially when handling multiple data types simultaneously.

Customer service

Claude's more empathetic responses make it better for customer interaction scenarios, while ChatGPT shines in providing precise, technical support.

SEO and digital marketing

Both tools handle SEO tasks well, but ChatGPT's ability to generate and analyse visual content gives it an edge for comprehensive digital marketing work.

Coding

Both assistants handle programming tasks effectively but with different approaches. Claude offers real-time feedback during coding sessions and excels at explaining complex code line by line, making it particularly useful for learning.

ChatGPT has broader language support and stronger integration capabilities with development environments, making it more versatile for professional developers working across multiple platforms.

Data Privacy and security

Claude takes a stricter stance on data privacy, choosing not to use user interactions for training by default. ChatGPT processes user data unless you opt out, something privacy-conscious users and businesses should consider.

It's not about better, it's about different

After extensive testing, it's clear that declaring a single winner misses the point. These are different tools optimised for different uses:

Choose Claude if:

  • You need to process long documents or conversations
  • Natural-sounding content is your priority
  • Data privacy is paramount
  • You're focusing on customer service or empathetic communication

Go with ChatGPT if:

  • You need multimodal capabilities (text, image, code)
  • Technical analysis is your primary use
  • You want more integrated features
  • Visual content creation is important

Making your choice and the right steps for success

The AI landscape is changing so quickly. There is already talk about Orion, ChatGPT’s next version, while Claude only recently updated its models. One thing is clear—we’re only at the beginning of this new AI age and what it can do.

The real winner in all of this is the users who understand how to leverage each platform's strengths.

Pro Tips for getting the most from both

Use Claude for:

  • Writing content that needs to maintain a consistent voice
  • Processing and analysing lengthy documents
  • Customer service templates and responses
  • Tasks requiring careful ethical consideration

Use ChatGPT for:

  • Technical documentation and analysis
  • Visual content creation and processing
  • Quick, structured responses
  • Multi-format content generation

The future of AI assistants

As these platforms continue to evolve, we're likely to see more specialisation rather than convergence. Claude's focus on ethical AI and natural language processing suggests future developments in those areas, while ChatGPT's multimodal capabilities hint at even more integrated features to come.

The choice between Claude and ChatGPT isn't about finding the "best" AI as much as it’s choosing the right tool for your specific needs. Their different approaches to AI development have created distinct strengths that serve different purposes.

For most users, the ideal solution might be access to both: Claude for its superior natural language processing and ethical considerations, and ChatGPT for its technical capabilities and multimodal features. Together, they represent the current state of the art in AI assistance, each pushing the boundaries in its own way.
